About Petrified Wood

This is modern art of ancient origin

A Window into Ancient History
Petrified wood is not commonly used for sculptures in the UK, with our studio currently the only one specialising in this unique, Earth-inspired artwork.

While the material itself is not as rare as other mineral-based stones, most petrified wood is sliced and sold to collectors rather than crafted into fully realised sculptures and functional art.

About Petrified Wood
How is Petrified Wood Formed

How is Petrified Wood Formed?

Petrified wood is formed through a fascinating natural process known as permineralisation.

When a tree falls and is buried by sediment, ash, or other materials, it becomes deprived of oxygen, preventing it from decaying.

Over millions of years, mineral-rich water flows through the sediment, gradually replacing the organic material of the wood with minerals like silica and quartz.

This process preserves the original structure of the wood, including its intricate grain patterns, but transforms it into stone, for a beautiful and enduring fossil.

Petrified Wood Insights

How long does it take for wood to be petrified?

The petrification process typically takes millions of years. The exact duration can vary depending on environmental conditions, such as the availability of mineral-rich water and the type of sediment covering the wood.

While the transformation from wood to stone is slow, the result is a material that captures the essence of ancient forests, preserved in stunning detail and colour.

How old is petrified wood?

Petrified wood dates back 200 million years or more.
The age of a piece of petrified wood is linked to the geological period during which the original tree was growing, as well as the time it took for the fossilisation process to complete.

Each piece of petrified wood in our collection carries with it a history that spans millions of years, connecting us to a time long before human civilisation.
We are currently working with specialists to get each piece in our collection carbon-dated, which will offer clients some fascinating context and backstory for their specific artwork.

What is a piece of petrified wood worth?

The value of a piece of petrified wood is determined by several factors; its size, colouration, rarity, and the intricacy of its natural patterns. In our collection, each piece is a unique work of art, meticulously crafted and carefully selected for its beauty and history.

Where can you find petrified wood?

Petrified wood can be found in several locations around the world, often in areas that were once covered by ancient forests and later buried by volcanic ash or sediment.
Some of the most famous sources include the Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, USA, and various sites in Indonesia, Madagascar, and Brazil.

Can you find petrified wood in the UK?

Petrified wood can be found in certain locations within the UK, particularly along the Dorset Coast. However, these areas are often protected, and the collection of petrified wood is generally prohibited.
Our pieces are sourced from select regions around the world where this ancient material is more abundant, ensuring that each piece in our collection is both legally and ethically obtained.

What is the difference between petrified wood and fossilized wood?

Petrified wood and fossilised wood are often used interchangeably, but they refer to the same process – wood that has undergone permineralisation, where organic material is gradually replaced with minerals, turning the wood into stone.

Petrified wood is simply a specific type of fossilised wood, known for remarkable preservation of the original structure and patterns of the tree, now immortalised in stone.
